Valar Atomics, the El Segundo-based startup that treats reactors like Tesla treats factories, just closed a $130M Series A to turn nuclear fission into the world’s next scalable export. The round was led by Snowpoint Ventures with co-leads Day One Ventures & Dream Ventures, and support from Balerion, Contrary, DTX, Alumni, Crosscut & TriplePoint Capital. Angels Palmer Luckey, Shyam Sankar & John Donovan jumped in too. Doug Philippone, ex-Army Ranger, JSOC commander & Palantir’s former global defense chief, joins the board. That’s not a résumé, that’s a launch sequence.
Founded in 2023 by Isaiah Taylor, Valar Atomics doesn’t fit the mold, it melted it. Taylor dropped out of high school at 16, was coding for six figures by 17, and built his first startup before most kids passed driver’s ed. His great-grandfather, Ward Schaap, worked on the Manhattan Project. Now Taylor’s building a new atomic age, backed by Mark Mitchell, the Chief Nuclear Officer who led the Micro Modular Reactor program at Ultra Safe Nuclear Corp. Together, they’ve fused software speed with nuclear depth, a cocktail rarely served this cold.
Valar’s not chasing the grid. It’s redefining where power lives. Their high-temp gas reactors (HTGRs) hit 800–900°C, use TRISO fuel that stays solid even when chaos reigns, and can pump out hydrogen, synthetic fuels & industrial heat, all without touching the grid. The design runs lean: 7 moving parts, no meltdown physics, and a build process that looks more like manufacturing than infrastructure.
In 10 months flat, and $12M spent, Valar built Ward Zero, a 100K-lb thermal prototype loaded with 300 sensors. Next comes Ward 250, breaking ground in Utah with eyes on achieving criticality by July 4, 2026, under the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s Nuclear Reactor Pilot Program. The company’s also teamed with the Philippines Nuclear Research Institute on a 100-kilowatt reactor, the first binding CRP of its kind.
This Series A pushes total funding past $150M and powers the blueprint for Valar’s “gigasites”, industrial-scale clusters of modular reactors producing carbon-neutral fuels & off-grid power cheaper than oil. Think hundreds of reactors humming in sync, supplying AI data centers, steel plants & hydrogen hubs with unshakable energy.
Valar Atomics isn’t waiting for permission, it’s building proof. With Isaiah Taylor & Mark Mitchell leading the charge, the company’s bringing nuclear back from policy paper to power source. This is the kind of heat the future runs on.
